Although it is not as prominent an issue as it once had been, dropping out of high school is still a problem affecting many young adults. Many just lose the drive to continue on with high school, while others feel that they are forced to drop out due to extenuating circumstances. Whatever the reason may be, it is imperative to think about your options before you make a decision. A decision of such a magnitude will have life-rendering consequences.

In a day where technology and science advances at such a rapid pace, it is of utter importance that one completes their high school education. Your secondary education is the time in life where you will learn all the basic skills needed to function in society, as well as an advanced work environment as the one we are in today. You are not only depriving yourself of an education when you refuse your high school education, but you are also turning away an invaluable experience. Unfortunately, this experience is one required by the vast majority of employers nowadays. Roughly 60% of employers require some type of higher education after a secondary education and in order to attend an institution of higher education, you must have completed your high school education. Those who do not complete their secondary education are more likely to depend on public assistance, have health problems and engage in criminal activity. Those who continue on beyond a secondary education enjoy increased income as well as increased health benefits. They also have more opportunities in life and thus, an increased satisfaction with life. Without a high school education, you are putting limits on what you can achieve in your lifetime.

For those who choose to leave behind their secondary education but would like to attend a college or university, they have the option of pursuing a GED. Some colleges and universities will accept GEDs but all of them will accept a high school diploma. Today, it is more important than ever for students to pursue some form of higher education. With the nature of the competitive job market, those without a high school education are left with practically no options. A secondary education is crucial to succeeding in higher education. Not only is a higher education beneficial for your career, it also provides an experience that cannot be derived from working somewhere you are forced to work, because you don’t have a secondary education. It improves your financial worth and increases your social and cultural experiences. This is something that money can not pay for.

If your choose to forgo your high school education, you are closing practically every door that is available in your lifetime. In an economy and society as the one we live in today, it is important that students push themselves to succeed. All students should be held in high expectations as a high school diploma is your key to a post-secondary education.
